GameStop game systems

Retro trade-in policyGameStop seems to be moving ahead with its retro games project, but it already looks like it’s going to run into some hurdles. I visited a GameStop in New York and asked about the program, and the clerk told me the company will be accepting retro game systems and showed me the guidelines documentation for trade-ins. Since GameStop hasn’t accepted really old game trade-ins for about a decade, there’s a bit of a flaw in the system. It’s purely technical, but it’s also hilarious.

The hardware trade-in process goes in four steps to ensure that anyone trading in a game system trades in one that works:

  1. Check to make sure the system is complete and none of the wires are frayed or loose.
  2. Plug the system in and make sure it powers on.

The third step is a field of question marks because it’s not a step — it’s a statement that I will quote directly: “Testing the video is not required as some testing TVs may not accept RF adaptors.”

GameStop has small test TVs into which you can plug old game systems to make sure they work. The staff uses them to make sure your PS3 or Xbox 360 isn’t broken when you trade it in, but the TVs don’t all have the legacy connections old game systems may require.
