Top new games for PS3
Ubisoft has decided it has had enough of developing for last generation games consoles. None of the publisher/developer’s big franchises will see new games released on the PS3 or Xbox 360 going forward. In fact, we won’t see any new Ubisoft games on those platforms anymore except for the rhythm game Just Dance.
This decision was confirmed by the company as part of a financial call with investors yesterday. PS4, Xbox One, and PC will be the focus for the big franchises including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, Rayman, and Prince of Persia if and when any of those IP’s get an update.
It’s unclear what that means for Wii U development, although I’d hazard a guess Ubisoft is also counting that as last-gen. I expect handheld games to still appear for the 3DS and possibly the PS Vita, but the real focus will remain on the PS4 and Xbox One (where the money is).
Focusing on the latest hardware should make development easier, especially if you consider how close the PS4 and Xbox One innards are to a PC. Ubisoft will also be able to push those systems harder in terms of performance without having to worry about a fallback in their engine for previous, incompatible hardware.
After the disaster that was the launch of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, you’d hope this narrowing of focus also allows more time for testing and optimization before release, and less huge patches post launch. Ubisoft cannot afford to release another bug-filled game any time soon.
