Popular games on PS3
Editor's Note: List last updated March 11, 2015
The PlayStation 3 era is in its twilight, and as its long, storied run comes to a close, it seems only right to look back on the many incredible experiences it gave us. There are far more than the 25 listed, here – so many more in fact that nailing a list like this down becomes like choosing which of your kids you love the most. But our panel of judges threw down, figured it out and came up with this: IGN’s Top 25 PlayStation 3 games.
This time around, your selection committee is: Vince Ingenito (Associate Editor), Justin Davis (Executive Editor), Marty Sliva (Editor), Mitch Dyer (Editor), and Miranda Sanchez (Associate Editor)
Our criteria are as follows:
The primary question this top 25 list is intended to answer is simple: "What are the 25 best games we played on this platform?" How much fun we had with the games is obviously our primary concern, but we also considered elements like longevity/staying power, influence, and innovation.
What do you think of our selections? Let us know in the comments, and sound-off with your own Top PS3 Games lists.
And now, without further ado...
Fez’s reverence for video games, the lovely soundtrack, hilarious inside jokes, and mysterious wonder are the claws that dig its hooks in deep. Mind-bending puzzles, insane alien languages, and risk-free exploration make Fez’s delightful, nostalgic world a joy to wander. It borrows liberally from many things, but Fez is still unlike anything else on PlayStation 3.
The original Dead Space is one of the PS3’s most atmospheric and disturbing experiences. Although the series changed significantly with each entry, the original is an authentic and diverse work of horror. At times, it evokes pure, unspeakable terror: the sinister, space religion of Unitology and its foundational artefact, The Marker, lend Dead Space a sublimely weird power. But it’s not just interested in atmosphere and suspense, either; it knows there’s plenty of mileage in the gruesome and grotesque, too. The game’s recurrent enemies, Necromorphs, are reanimated corpses stretch into macabre shapes. Limbs sprout from nowhere and tendons rip. They’re horrifying, and can be killed only by strategically hacking off limbs using Isaac Clarke’s arsenal of modified engineering tools. It sounds gross, and it is, but it helped established Dead Space as the PS3’s essential horror game.
Few first person shooters set their sights as high as Bioshock Infinite did, and though it struggled to reconcile its relentlessly action-packed pace with its thoughtful thematics, it still soared to impressive heights. The floating city of Columbia is one of the most memorable locales in recent gaming memory, and it’s filled with characters who are equally memorable. Even through the near-constant ringing of gunfire, Booker, Elizabeth, and the twins left an indelible mark on the PS3.
