More than a year after it was first announced, Sony is bringing cloud gaming service PlayStation Now to PlayStation 3. The subscription and rental service will become available on Sony's older console on May 12th, and will offer a 7-day free trial to people who haven't yet signed up. Those who sign up for the offer will have access to more than 100 PS3 games, including Batman Arkham City, Saints Row IV, and Final Fantasy XIII.

Four months after it became available on PS4

The streaming service first launched earlier this year on PlayStation 4, three years after Sony paid $380 million for video game streaming specialists Gaikai to help develop the technology to power it. In addition to PS4 and PS3, the service is also available on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV, and certain Sony televisions and Blu-ray players. A deal with Samsung will also see it appear on selected smart TVs built by the Korean manufacturer this year too.

PlayStation Now offers access to its library for a monthly price of $19.99, and also allows users to rent specific games from a wider list for one-off payments. Sony has ambitious plans for the service, which it touted as a way to offer backwards compatability for PS3 games on PS4, but problems with lag and a comparatively hefty price tag have not yet made PlayStation Now a truly essential service.
